Are you creating the habit of leadership?
New Year, New Newsletter
One of the hardest transitions I made in my career was the one from technical consultant to a manager. Suddenly I was responsible for more than just myself and more than just my work. I had to learn to manage other people and their work.
This transition is hard for all of us.
Rome wasn’t built in a day and nor were good leaders. Leaders are not created in two-day workshops which create a wealth of important knowledge but little change.
If you’ve ever joined a gym (especially if you’ve joined more than once…) you’ll know that building healthy habits take time and need to be learnt, practiced and coached.
Leadership is the same - incremental changes you integrate into your daily routine that add up to create you as a leader.
The habit of leadership.
This is what I will help you build.
Each week you'll receive…
Leadership best practices and how you can bring them to life
Productivity tips on how to build sustainable habits
Bite sized chunks of leadership development content
Skill builders such as presentation or delegation tips
First glance on new courses, packages and ideas to take your leadership development to the next level
Worksheet: Write Your Own User Manual
Do you wish that you knew what made certain team members tick? How they work best and how to get the most out of them?
Every time I start work with someone new we write our user manual; a 'how to' guide on how to work best with us.
It’s a high-impact activity and a fantastic way to build trust with a new team member.
Of course, you could run this activity with an existing team who want to learn how to work together more effectively.
Recently I learnt that a team member hates Monday meetings because she likes to use her high energy on Mondays to get stuff done instead.
So we won't have any meetings on Mondays.
It's simple things like this that make a difference. We also discussed how we both deal with conflict and stress, this information is invaluable to avoid misunderstandings and awkward moments when tensions on projects get high.
Download your copy of the guide , complete with a ‘user manual’ template and instructions on how to run the activity with your team.
Video: How Do You To Do?
Hands up who is getting organised in 2018?
I'm often asked how I manage my to do list. In this short video I will show you...
How to set your priorities
How to decide what to do when
How to lay out your to do list
I find having one TOP priority per day helps me manage my time better - carving out time to complete it during the time I'm most productive (morning). Momentum creates momentum and once I've crossed that item off my list I feel a) smug and b) energised to go and complete some other tasks.
This also links nicely to the habit of leadership. When I was a newer leader (and still now) I put things in my diary/to do list related to my team. Sending someone a 'good luck' message for an exam, birthdays or important milestones in their projects. These small acts make a big difference when it comes to building trust with your team members.
Next week: I'll be taking the delegation quadrant and helping you develop your team by reducing your workload (the ultimate win/win?).
