Dealing with your delegation dilemmas and leadership lessons from the Australian Open 🎾
Delegation Dilemmas
Green. Well, the wrong colour green to be precise. I used to hate it when I reviewed work and someone had used the 'wrong' colour green. This makes me laugh now but it was a bit tragic looking back.
It was exactly this behaviour that held me back from effectively delegating.
'What if they don't do it right?' (read: what if they use the wrong green?).
I remember trying to delegate an audit procedure to a new team member when I was a new manager.
I spent the whole time distracted and internally freaking out because they were not making ANY notes. I was convinced they weren't going to do a good job and then I'd a) look bad and b) have to fix it.
'It's quicker to just do it myself' (read: I don't want to give up control).
Sometimes I just felt bad delegating tasks, especially the boring ones.
'They'll think I think I'm too good for this type of work'Â (read: I think this work is equal to a punishment/don't want to look egotistical).
Now when I work with newly promoted managers, one of the first skills they ask for help with is delegation
Effective delegation is critical for;
1) managing your work/life balance
2) good project management and
3) leading your team by developing them
Not doing it at all will cause you problems in the future. Doing it badly could hold you back from progressing in your career.
Does this all sound a bit too familiar? Â
Fear not. This week I'm tackling delegation so you can let go and lead.
Keep reading to find out how.
