Are you to short for your own good? PLUS π announcement π
It's the little things
In the last two days, three things have happened;
1) I read this articleΒ about all the little trade offs we make every day - the things that seem small to us, but mean a lot to others.
2) Yesterday someone asked meΒ 'why can't people see the change that's needed?'.Β My response?Β Β 'They're busy being busy'.
3) I read the latest LinkedIn Workplace Learning report, which states that:
"94% of employees say that they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their career development"
BUT
"...the number one reason employees say that they feel held back from learning is because they do not have time to learn the skills they need."
GAH!
Β All three of these situations areΒ typical cases of us putting short term over long term.
Β short term > long term Β We have created a monster.Β We know what's good for us and what we 'should' (and usually want to) be doing but end up undoing ourselves with the tyranny of busy.
In the Eisenhower/Covey time management matrix, we should all happily exist in the 'important / non urgent' quadrant.Β But instead, we spend our time fighting fires in 'important / urgent' quadrant.
Β It's the little things that will make the big difference
The same LinkedIn report states that "56% of employees say that they would spend more time learning if their manager directed them to complete a specific course in order to gain or improve their skills.".
The simple act of supporting your team in their development can be the difference between them having the skills they need, and not.
Saying thank you or recognising a job well done is another simple 'little thing' we can easily include in our busy schedules.
These little actions also build trust, "86 percent of employees who were recognised in the last month say they trust their boss" according to a 2016 Globoforce survey.
Β Build the habit
What little thing can you do today for your team?
Do that thing.
"Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example"
