You aren't measuring the right things π
Are you measuring what matters?
Usually when I hear about challenges teams and companies are having it comes back to one simple fact: we are not measuring the right things.
Β
The KPIs we set, reward and recognise have a direct impact on behaviours.Β If we only measure and reward sales targets (by commission / bonuses / promotions etc) then people will focus on achieving these β come what may.
Β
You only have to look at the recent Royal Commission into Australiaβs banks to see dangerous examples of this in action.
At a lower level itβs these systems (real or perceived) that create silos, unhealthy competition and a fixed perception of value.
Β
And all your corporate values and mission statements wonβt change this fact.
Β
This is why we canβt always βtrainβ for behaviours; if the functional ecosystem does not allow for the desired positive or collaborative behaviours to succeed or thrive, thereβs no point spending money trying to train them into our teams.
This is where culture is made or broken.
Β
High performing sports teams do this well β by measuring the right behaviours and elements of play, the right outcome (a win) should be inevitable.
I spoke to an AFL player who shared that in the locker room after a game, the conversation is less about whether they won or lost, but whether they each executed their game plan.
So not whether they hit their revenue target, but whether each team member worked and behaved in a way that made success inevitable.
Β
Most of us canβt (yet) change what our companies choose to measure, but we can influence this in our own teams.Β We can choose to create and encourage informal βKPIsβ that are discussed, measured and rewarded locally.
These collectively designed ways of working towards a shared end goal can include everything from how often we meet to how we give each other feedback through to which days we eat lunch as a team.
Β
Give your team the power to codesign how theyβll work together, you might be surprised by the results.
