The reason you won't get promoted
What does future you do?
Last week at the Pillar Leaders workshop we talked about interview skills, which was a fantastic conversation about using your strengths to secure the new job, or promotion, that you deserve.
This got me thinking about the need to create your own learning & development journey, one that is aligned to where you want to be, rather than where you are.
Develop for the job you want, not the one you have.
The best way to secure yourself that promotion or the new role is to act as if you're already doing it. That means thinking, acting and being in a way that is aligned to the 'future you'.
Of course, there might be some more advanced technical skills that you need to advance, but more often than not, the success of your future career will be a result of your attitude, mindset and a conscious investment in your own development.
Look at the people already in the roles you aspire to;
What are they doing that is different to you?
How are they approaching problems?
How did they achieve their success?
What are they wearing (no, really)?
What are they reading and listening to?
What are they sharing on LinkedIn?
Who do they surround themselves with?
If you don't know the answer to some of these questions, now is the time to find out by inviting them for a coffee (or tea).
And if you feel a bit stuck and don't know what role you want, this is a perfect way to start to craft that vision through these conversations.
Make your development towards your next role a priority with a carefully structured and intentional plan towards what the 'future you' looks like; what you need to be able to do and how you need to think, act and be.
Ask yourself 'what would future *|IF:FNAME|**|ELSE:|*me*|END:IF|* do / say in this situation?' and try taking that action.
Try your new role on for size this week, see how it feels.
