What's Your Impact?
I'm on holiday at the moment.Β Which is a perfect time for big existential questions of value,Β purpose and impact.
Someone asked me what a definition of success was.Β My response was living a long and regret-free life full of interest and impact.
The day before, a friend asked me to help him with something, which gave me a huge sense of purpose as I helped him improve hisΒ performance in an area I had experience in.
All of this led me to think more about the impact I want to make and how to do more ofΒ that.Β And it's quite a responsibility, thinking about the difference you want to make forΒ others.
In the work I do helping leaders and teams be more effective, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and that I'm making no difference because the challenges feel endless.Β Thinking about my impact helps define what I'm doing,Β focusses back onto why I'm doing it and how I can do itΒ better.
Of course, the impact you make might be through your profession, in your family life, or as part of a hobby,Β but the important thing isΒ setting the intention for your impact to use as a guide to your actions and decisions.
Whether I'm having my own existential crisis orΒ working with clients who are working through this question themselves, I like to use the following questions to create some clarity.
What Impact Do You Want to Make?
What do people always come to you for?
What do you find easy that others don't?
What problems do you like to solve?
When do you feel most valued?
What is the impact you could make?
Are you regularly doing activities or work that align to the impact you want to make?
"You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."
