Are you well supported?
Newsletter Announcement!
From 12 November I’m merging my Habit of Leadership newsletter with my friends over at Pillar Leaders as we join forces to bring you even more great leadership content.
You'll still be hearing from me regularly in the Pillar Leader newsletter, along with other collaborators, as we combine to bring different perspectives to leadership development.
What do you need to do? Nothing! You’ll automatically receive the Pillar Leaders newsletter next week but check your junk folder in case over-zealous filters don’t recognise the different 'from' address.
(As usual, you can unsubscribe at anytime... but I hope you don't want to).
Who Supports You?
Recently I’ve had a number of conversations with leaders about challenges they are facing in their teams and organisations. Ultimately I’ve asked the question ‘who’s supporting you?’. A surprising number of times this is met with silence and a struggle to answer the question.
In her book ‘It’s Who You Know’, Janine Garner talks about the importance of finding your ‘core four’. Jim Rohn famously said that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.
Whatever the number, knowing who is in your corner is a critical factor in your success. At their best, this tribe should tell you when your ideas suck, give you a much needed pep-talk (or maybe a hug) and regularly remind you of what's important.
Someone much wiser than me often says ‘you don’t need to build a network, you have a network, you just need to know what to do with it’.
Whether it's formal support such as mentoring, teaching or coaching or more informal sharing of experiences and perspectives, the starting point is to know what you need and for what outcome.
It's also important to think about whether you are making the most of the relationships with those around you, with a mindset of reciprocity of course, to develop yourself and in turn add value to others.
Questions to ask yourself;
Who supports me?
In what way(s)?
What support do I feel that I'm lacking?
Who do I know who could fill this gap?
What value and support can I offer others?
And as always, turn this into an action. Start a more meaningful conversation with your network today.
"You can do anything as long as you have the passion, the drive, the focus, and the support."
